Last month Delaware UK joined forces with Delaware International, from the 10th to 23rd of October, to get the #peopleofdelaware up and moving for a whole two weeks. WeCare collaborated with many of Delaware’s working groups and societies to create an array of exciting events!

The list of events included a huge cycle marathon, table tennis tournaments, a virtual quiz and the Bath Half Marathon - all culminating in bringing the whole of DUK together with families, friends and even pets to reach our goal of achieving 1 million steps in a weekend!

Virtual Quiz

Our WeCare2Move programme kicked off with a virtual pub quiz on 11th October. Thank you to everyone who took part and to our fabulous quiz masters Ben Bowen, Ben Raymond and Rob McKersie

A variety of topics were covered including general knowledge, sports, music, Delaware knowledge and riddles. There were some tough questions for our quizzers, resulting in a range of different scores!

In first place was Karen Green, followed by Busola Wilfred in second and Jelle Devlaminck in third. Congratulations to all of our winners!

Table Tennis Tournament

On 13th October, WeCare joined forces with the DUK Table Tennis Society (newly founded by Hugh Lee) to hold a table tennis tournament. The goal of this event was to get people up and moving, whilst raising money for Mind, DUK’s chosen charity for 2023.

It was a bracket tournament, which meant that only the winning participants from each round progressed to the next and the losing participants were eliminated. In order to win the round, participants had to win at least 2 out of 3 games. Each participant was asked to contribute a small fee to play, as a contribution towards our fundraising efforts.

Our final winners included Benula Benny in first place, followed by Josh Westwell in second, and Jacob Mo in third!

1 Million Steps Challenge

During the weekend of 13th – 14th October, Delaware UK conducted a 1 Million Steps event, where the goal was to reach 1 million steps collectively as a group. 16 employees took part in the initiative, in which the sole aim was to get everyone moving. In order to track the progress, Strava (a physical exercise tracking app) was used.

Overall, the group reached a whooping 116 miles collectively! Kudos to Tommy Williams for multiple runs and Franziska Schuett for her walk in the Cotswold. Edwin Nardelli completed the most miles out of everyone, a huge 22.8 miles, with Jelle Devlaminck coming in next at 16.7 miles and then Alison Skinner with 13.4 miles!

Bath Half Marathon

On Sunday 16th October, one of the UK’s largest half marathons took place in Bath. Whether it was to chase down that PB time, or to raise money for a charity close to heart, thousands of people took part in this year’s Bath Half including our own Edwin Nardelli and Clair Hartley

Both participants said they had a great time and that it was one of the biggest running challenges they’ve completed to date. It was a sunny day with a lot of support from the crowd, which pushed our participants to exceed their limits and achieve their best. They concluded the event with a well-deserved beer and lunch to refuel the carbs and talk about the race.

Cycle Network Event

In support of #WeCare2Move fortnight on Saturday 22nd October, the Delaware UK Cycling Network got together for a 35-mile ride from our Bristol Hub.

A mix of members from Bristol, Birmingham and London attended, with a good mix of abilities. The cycling loop was from Bristol to the Chew Valley Reservoir in the south, with a much-needed fish and chips/cafe stop at the Salt and Malt Cafe. A few tasty hills were thrown in after the stop with thankfully no f&c coming back up, although one member of the team did have to get off their bike and do a walk of shame!

It was a great success overall and the DUK Cycling Network are excited to plan their next challenge!
