Why should you care about data integration?

Mar 09, 2016

Let’s start off this story with a joke:

“80 percent of time spent by data scientists is related to data preparation. The other 20 percent of the time, they complain about having to do so much data preparation”.

I have been working in data warehousing and analytics for almost 10 years now. 10 years ago, I indeed spent most of my time fetching data from different data sources, combining and transforming it to get it into the required format.

Is data integration still relevant?

A few days ago, I came across this blog post Data Integration is the Foundation by Andy Leonard. He shares his vision on data integration in today’s world and why it is still vital for a lot of different business scenarios. I agree with Andy and want to drive his point even a step further – not having the proper data integrations in place can become very costly. Just think about the recent news story about the Belgian police needing to manually copy information between different IT systems – that is a clear and direct cost caused by the lack of integration. These costs can also be less obvious, but even more real: if it is hard to gather correct and relevant customer information, your sales and service departments might not be able to make a real impact., causing lost sales or customer churn.
